Adult Education Association.

The Adult Education Association of the U.S.A. (AEA-USA) was formed in 1951 by the merger of the American Association for Adult Education (supported by the Carnegie Foundation) and the Department of Adult Education of the National Education Association. In 1982, the AEA-USA combined with the National Association of Public School Adult Educators (NAPSAE) to become the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE). The collection contains material from both organizations.

Association of University Evening Colleges (U.S.)

The Association of University Evening Colleges (AUEC) was formerly (until 1939) the Association of Deans and Directors of University Evening Colleges; in 1973 it became the Association of Continuing Higher Education. AUEC's purpose was to study the problems of the evening college and to encourage mutual interchange and stimulation of ideas among members. The papers of the AUEC consist of minutes of committees, convention records; general correspondence; enrollment statistics; history, including six phono-tapes of oral interviews with staff members; newsletters, including press releases and copy; personnel records, including vitae and correspondence; regional meeting reports; and statistical reports of the AUEC. Major correspondents include members of the Executive Committee, editors of AUEC publications, and various education organizations. The majority of the collection consists of Blakely's writing and includes books, papers, speeches, presentations, articles and essays. Center for the Study of Liberal Education for Adults

Established by a grant from the Fund for Adult Education in 1951, the Center for the Study of Liberal Education for Adults (CSLEA) worked with universities seeking to initiate or to improve adult education programs. Its purpose was to help American higher education develop greater effectiveness and a deeper sense of responsibility for the liberal education of adults. During its tenure the Center had three directors; John S. Diekhoff (1952-1953), John B. Schwertman (1953-1956), and A.A. Liveright (1956-1968). The records include correspondence, organizational files, publication files, writings, and miscellany. Key correspondents, mostly from the Center, are James T. Carey, Alexander N. Chaffee, Edmund Bigelow,1887-1936.

Papers of the American clergyman, educator. Chaffee was a Presbyterian minister in New York City. Correspondence, letters to magazines to which Chaffee contributed, notes, sermons, scrapbooks, diaries, and published material. Sermons (1914-1936) include such topics as religion, specifically Christianity, and its relationship to politics, labor, technocracy, war, pacifism, communism, and socialism.

Correspondence, memoranda, minutes, newsletters, photographs, reports, speeches, writings and memorabilia of the internationally-recognized American adult educator. Personal material includes family and friends as well as organizations with which Dr. Charters was involved (e.g., Park Central Presbyterian Church). Professional material pertains to Dr. Charters' work with a wide range of issues and organizations in the field of adult and continuing education, including the Adult Education Association (AEA/USA), Association for Continuing Higher Education (ACHE), Center for the Study of Liberal Education for Adults (CSLEA), Coalition of Adult Education Organizations (CAEO), Commission of Professors of Adult Education (CPAE), International Conference on Adult Education (ICAE), International Congress of University Adult Education (ICUAE), Middle States Association (MSA), National University Extension Association (NUEA) and its successor organizations, and UNESCO. Charters, Jessie Blount Allen, b. 1880

Jessie and W.W. (Werrett Wallace) Charters were pioneers in the field of adult education. Among other things, Jessie founded the Department of Adult Education at Ohio State University and W.W. was Director of Research at Stephens College in Colombia Missouri as well as the founding editor of the Journal of Higher Education. The collection includes correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, books and a manual, and primarily relates to Jessie Charters.

Commission on Adult Basic Education (U.S.)

Records and papers of the adult education and literacy organization. Collection includes conference planning and programs, minutes, published material, newsletters, membership directories, policies and procedures, bylaws, treasurer's reports, strategic planning files, historian reports, more.

Council of National Organizations (U.S.)

The Council of National Organizations gathers information on educational agencies for public use. Collection includes general files containing correspondence and printed material on member groups.

ERIC Clearinghouse on Adult Education.

The ERIC/AE collection contains organizational material, correspondence, financial records, printed material, and reports related to ERIC/AE and its predecessor, the Library of Continuing Education. Printed material includes information sources, occasional papers and newsletters published by the Clearinghouse. Writings by Alexander N. Charters, Margaret Charters, Roger DeCrow, Stanley M. Grabowski, Charles Hoover, Huey B. Long, John A. Niemi, John Ohliger, Sara M. Steele and Coolie Verner are included.

Galaxy Conference on Adult Education (1969: Washington, D.C.)

The Galaxy Conference on Adult Education was held in Washington, D.C. in 1969. Participating organizations included the American Education Association, American Library Association, Commission of Professors of Adult Education, Committee of Adult Education Organizations, Council of National Organizations, National Association for Public School Adult Education, National Council on Adult Jewish Education, and the National University Extension Association. The records of the Galaxy Conference provide comprehensive documentation of the history, planning and execution of the conference.

Hansl, Eva vB. (Eva vom Baur).

Papers of the American author, journalist, radio producer, and lecturer (1899-1978). Collection includes biographical material, correspondence, radio broadcasts files, speeches, and writings. Bulk relates to the radio programs for which Hansl was program supervisor (1939-1940): Women in the making of America, broadcast in cooperation with the WPA's Federal Theatre Radio Division, and Gallant American women, with the support of the U.S. Office of Education. Hansl later produced Womanpower (1943-1944), in cooperation with the War Manpower Commission.

Extensive collection of materials relating to the education, employment, marital status, and intellectual life of women in society. Material encompasses women in the U.S. as well as in other countries. Topics include education, careers, roles and attitudes, family issues (marriage, divorce, children, home management), well-known women, working women, and many other subjects. Collected by Eva vom Baur Hansl, American author, journalist, radio producer, and lecturer.

Hendrickson, Andrew, 1899-

Consists of correspondence, reports, printed material, and memorabilia, including certificates, plaques, and photographs. The collection includes material generated by Herschel W. Nisonger (predecessor), William Dowling (successor), and Andrew Hendrickson during their tenures as professors of adult education at Ohio State University, however the bulk of the material belongs to Hendrickson (1947-1967). Correspondents whose letters are of significant depth and duration include: William D. Dowling, John B. Holden, Cyril O. Houle, Glenn S. Jensen, Homer Kempfer, Malcolm S. Knowles, Burton W.
